AFLATOXIN-RELATED
PET FOOD RECALLS
Advanced Animal Nutrition

Advanced Animal Nutrition announced a voluntary recall of its dry Dog Power Dog Food- due to aflatoxin levels that were detected above the acceptable limit. The affected products were manufactured between January 4, 2011 and November 18, 2011. No illnesses have been reported in association with these products to date, and no other Advanced Animal Nutrition pet food products are involved in this recall.

Affected products are Dog Power Adult Maintenance Formula 21-12 Dog Food, 50 pound bags, Dog Power Hunters Formula 27-14 Dog Food, 50 pound bags, Dog Power Hi-Pro Performance Formula 26-18 Dog Food, 50 pound bags. The recall only applies to the products with the following Packaging Date Codes (lot numbers): K0004 through K1322.

While no adverse health effects related to these products have been reported, Advanced Animal Nutrition is implementing this recall as a precautionary measure. Consumers are urged to return affected products -whether in opened or unopened packages - to their place of purchase for a full refund. For more information, contact 866/648-7646.

Arrow Brand Dog Food

O’Neal’s Feeders Supply of DeRidder, LA, announced that it has recalled an entire year’s worth of dry Arrow Brand dog food due to corn with elevated levels of aflatoxin. The recall affects food manufactured between December 1, 2010 and December 1, 2011.

The recall applies only to dog food distributed throughout Louisiana and Texas with packaging date codes 4K0341 through 4K0365 and 04K1001 through 4K1325. The affected products include Arrow Brand 21 percent Dog Chunks 40 lb. bag, Arrow Brand Super Proeaux Dog Food 40 lb. bag and Arrow Brand Professional Formula Dog Food 50 lb. bag.

Cargill Animal Nutrition

Cargill says it has heard no reports of illness, but the recalled dog foods are Professional Formula River Run Hi-NRG 24-20 Dog Food, 50 pound bags, River Run Professional Formula 27-18 Dog Food, 50 pound bags, River Run 21% Protein Dog Food, 40 and 50 pound bags and Hi-Pro No-Soy Dog Food, 40 and 50 pound bags, Marksman Dog Food 24% Protein 20% Fat, 40 pound bags, 20% Protein 10% Fat, 40 and 50 pound bags and 28% Protein 18% Fat, 40 pound bags.

The recall applies only to the above products with these packaging date codes (lot numbers): 4K0335 through 4K0365, LL0335 through LL0365, 4K1001 through 4K1335 and LL1001 through LL1335. Cargill says no other of its Animal Nutrition pet food products are involved.

Iams Pet Food - Proctor & Gamble

The parent company of Iams pet food, Procter & Gamble (P&G), is voluntarily recalling a single production lot of ProActive Health Smart Puppy dry dog food due to aflatoxin levels that were detected to be above the acceptable limit.

The recall is limited to Iams ProActive Health Smart Puppy dry dog food with Use By or Expiration Dates of February 5 or February 6, 2013. Affected lot numbers include 7.0-pound bags: 12784177I6, 1901402305; 8.0-pound bags: 12794177D2, 12794177D3, 1901410208; 17.5-pound bags: 12794177K1, 12794177K2 and 1901401848.

The recalled Iams ProActive Health Smart Puppy dry dog food has already been removed from store shelves. No other Iams products were affected. P&G advises consumers who purchased this product with the above lot numbers to stop using and discard it. You can contact Iams at 866/908-1569 for a replacement voucher.

Petrus Feed and Seed Stores

Petrus Feed and Seed Stores, Inc. announced a voluntary recall of its dry dog food - 21% Protein Dog Food in 40 lb Petrus Feed bags. The product is being recalled because the product was manufactured with corn which tested above acceptable levels for Aflatoxin. The affected products were manufactured at Cargill’s manufacturing facility located in LeCompte, Louisiana between December 1, 2010 and December 1, 2011.

The recall only applies 21% Dog Food, packaged in 40 lb Petrus Feed bags with the following packaging Date codes (lot numbers) 4K1011 through 4K1307. Updated lot numbers are 4K1011 through 4K1335.

While no adverse health effects related to these products have been reported, Petrus Feed and Seed Store, Inc. is implementing this recall as a precautionary measure. Consumers are urged to return affected products -whether in opened or unopened packages - to their place of purchase for a full refund. P&G Voluntarily Recalls One Production Lot of Dry Dog Food
 

PET FOOD RECALL

The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) has voluntarily retrieved a single production lot of dry dog food due to aflatoxin levels that were detected above the acceptable limit. This product has already been retrieved from store shelves. No illnesses have been reported in association with this production lot to date, and no other Iams pet food products are involved.
Product affected by this announcement: Iams ProActive Health Smart Puppy dry dog food with Use By or Expiration Dates of February 5 or February 6, 2013

The affected product lot was distributed to a limited number of retailers located in the eastern United States (AL, CT, DE, FL, GA, LA, MD, ME, MS, NC, NH, NJ, NY, PA, SC, VA). These retailers have already removed this product from store shelves. No other dry dog food, dry cat food, dog or cat canned food, biscuits/treats or supplements are affected by this announcement.
While no health effects related to this product have been reported, P&G retrieved this product as a precautionary measure. Consumers who purchased the product listed should stop using the product and discard it and contact Iams at the number below for a replacement voucher. Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring by-product from the growth of Aspergillus flavus and can be harmful to pets if consumed in significant quantities. Pets which have consumed this product and exhibit symptoms of illness including sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint to the eyes or gums, or diarrhea should be seen by a veterinarian.

Procter & Gamble Recall Specific Lots of Iams Canned Cat Food

June 13, 2010
The affected Iams canned cat food is:

Iams ProActive Health canned Cat and Kitten Food, all varieties of 3 ounce and 5.5 ounce cans, with "09/2011" and "06/2012" date stamps on the bottom of the can.

The date stamps are found on the first line of the two lines stamped on the bottom of the can. All cans of this food marked with these two date stamps should be discarded.

This recall is limited to only Iams canned cat food in North America. No other Iams pet food is involved. Iams Veterinary Formula cat is NOT included in this voluntary recall.

Clinical signs of thiamine deficiency would be limited primarily to cases where pet owners have been feeding only canned cat food. Common symptoms may include anorexia, excessive salivation, generalized weakness, ataxia, ventriflexion (head and neck excessively curving under the body), tremors and seizures.

Veterinarians with suspected cases or who need further information should call the company's veterinary line at 800/535-8387. Pet owners can call P&G toll-free at 877/340-8826 for further information.


Nature's Variety Pet Food Recall

The Lincoln, Nebraska pet food manufacturer Nature's Variety recently recalled all of their Chicken Formula & Organic Chicken products with a "Best if Used By" date on or before 2/5/11 after receiving test results that indicated these products may have been contaminated with Salmonella. The "Best if Used By" date can be found above the handling instructions on the back of the packages. Nature's Variety are asking consumers to return any unopened products to the store they purchased the products from in order to receive a refund or exchange. However, those products that have been opened can be thrown away and consumers can bring in their receipt to the store they purchased the product from for a refund or exchange.

According to the Nature's Variety website, the following products with UPC codes may be affected:

* UPC#7 69949 60130 2 – Chicken Formula 3 lb medallions
* UPC#7 69949 60120 3 – Chicken Formula 6 lb patties
* UPC#7 69949 60121 0 – Chicken Formula 2 lb single chubs
* UPC#7 69949 50121 3 – Chicken Formula 12 lb retail display case of chubs
* UPC#7 69949 60137 1 – Organic Chicken Formula 3 lb medallions
* UPC#7 69949 60127 2 – Organic Chicken Formula 6 lb patties

No other Nature's Variety products are included in the recall.

Diamond Pet Foods & Wysong

November 2, 2009 Several companies have recently recalled certain cat foods deficient in thiamine, dog foods containing mold, and dog foods that could contain plastic.

 
Diamond Pet Foods recalled several lots of cat foods deficient in thiamine that Diamond manufactured for Premium Edge Pet Foods. The recall applies to Premium Edge Finicky Adult Cat food and Premium Edge Adult Cat Hairball Management food with date codes of RAF0501A22X 18 lb., RAF0501A2X 6 lb., RAF0802B12X 18 lb. (BB30FEB11), RAH0501A22X 18 lb., RAH0501A2X 6 lb. The dates of manufacture are May 28 and Aug. 30.
 
Wysong recalled certain lots of dry dog foods containing mold - but no mycotoxins - that the company manufactured in June and July. The recall affects lots 090617, 090624, 090706, and 090720 of Wysong Maintenance dog food and lot 090623 of Wysong Senior dog food.

Swine Flu

April 29, 2009 The following information has been provided by the AVMA - American Veterinary Medical Association:

  • Despite its name, there is no evidence to date that this particular virus originated in pigs or is spread from pigs to people.
  • Even though there is no evidence this new virus is found in pigs, swine practitioners have stepped up their surveillance.
  • There is no reason to question the safety of your food.
    • While there is no evidence this virus has been found in pigs, even if it were, proper preparation would kill the virus.
    • As always, practice proper food hygiene when preparing meals.
  • This virus is spread from person to person. 
  • The incubation period is estimated at 1 to 8 days, typically about 48 hours. 
  • Be vigilant. Visit your physician if you experience flu-like symptoms.

FDA expands recall list, adds more pet-food products

January 28, 2009 The list of recalled products containing peanut derivatives, compiled by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, has grown over the last few days, with seven additional pet-food products being added.

Mars Petcare US Voluntary Limited Food Recall

September 16, 2008 Mars Petcare US announced a voluntary recall of products manufactured at its Everson, Pennsylvania facility. The pet food is being voluntarily recalled because of potential contamination with Salmonella serotype Schwarzengrund. This voluntary recall only affects the United States.

Possible New Strain of Parvo Hits West Michigan

August 28, 2008 On Friday, August 22nd a press release went out titled 'Highly Virulent or New Strain of Parvo in Kent County.' Although the claim that this is 'highly virulent or new' has not been verified, MVMA (Michigan Veterinary Medical Association) wanted to make members aware of the situation. This strain of Parvo (Parvo2c) has been suspected as the cause of death for at least three adult canines in Kent County, according to officials at the Humane Society of Kent County.

Canine Brucellosis, Brucella Canis

August 7, 2008 An investigation by the Michigan Department of Agriculture’s (MDA) Animal Industry Division identified three Brucella canis (CB) positive “designer” dog breeding facilities in Missaukee, Osceola, and Wexford counties that provided small cross-bred lap dogs to pet shops and individuals throughout the state. Authorities also found two Van Buren County purebred dogs imported from a kennel in Indiana to be positive for CB. Indiana animal health officials are following up in that state.
